alto. cbs 5 reporter john knapp is in menlo park with the latest. >> reporter: we're on the eastern edge of menlo park, not far from bay front. apparently this is where all of this began and happen. two vehicles pulled up to those traffic lights. one of those vehicles had six people in it. there was some kind of altercation. a gun came out and bullets with fired at the back of the victim vehicle, the mother and the child were shot. here is detective -- or rather commander dave bertinni of the menlo park police. >> at this point, the two victims are at stanford hospital in stable condition. my understanding is that the injuries to the child are wounds to the legs. and a graze to the led. to the mother, there's also wounds to the legs. but they're all in stable conditioning. they are non-life-threatening injuries at this time. >> reporter: what we do know is the car at the intersection went south. at that point, they found a

mcdonald's, apparently called police and ambulance. and they were taken to stanford hospital where they're being treated. the good news, of course, is that these are not life- threatening injuries. the bad news, a mother and child shot, and the motive we just don't know. there has also been a fatal shooting in east palo alto, just a few blocks from where the menlo park victims were found. paramedics were called to a man shot in the head at capital avenue and bell street around 9 this evening. the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. well, dozens of people walked along san francisco's waterfront today to show support for gun control. the event was organized by the group one million moms for gun control. it was intended to show solidarity for these events across the country, the largest of which were held in washington, d.c. members of the newtown, connecticut, community joined in with thousands demanding action. >> if it can happen in newtown, it can happen in any town, in

any city, in any state, until they make these federal laws. >> the gun-control battle is leading to huge crowds at gun shows. many at the rallies say they want to get the guns out of the hands of dangerous people, not take away anyone's second amendment rights. another bay area gun buyback program turned out another large turnout. one prominent victim of gun violence says people are starting to rethink gun ownership. >> reporter: the cars lined up for blocks for the san mateo gun buyback. >> assault rifles are $200. >> reporter: besides those, all kinds of guns were brought in. >> we'll give money for up to three guns. >> reporter: the idea behind this drive is simple. >> this is a no question, gun buyback event. >> reporter: donald smith brought in two old rifles. >> haven't been used in many years, so time to get rid of

them. >> reporter: and as easy as that, he got his $200, no questions asked. >> where is the money? >> the money is right here. all right? >> already spent? >> you bet. we're heading out of town. >> this is a 100-round magazine. >> reporter: congresswoman jackie speier was in attendance. she was shot in 1978. she says she doesn't own a gun, but her husband does. >> there is a purpose for guns in our society, four hunting, for sport, and any good hunter will say you don't need more than three to five rounds. if you're not good enough with three to five rounds, you probably shouldn't be hunting. >> reporter: reporting from san mateo, cbs 5. >> 24 assault weapons were turned in, 33le handguns and 371 long guns. the guns will be destroyed. two people had to be pulled from the san francisco bay this afternoon after a tugboat hit

their sailboat. the tugboat was escorting a barge when it hit a small vessel. the coast guard is investigating. oh bay area headlines, a suspicious package shut down part of san francisco's north beach neighborhood. police briefly evacuated people around 2 this afternoon. the bomb squad showed up and took the package away. police wouldn't say what the item was. and a banner fell from the sky in san francisco, south of market, knocking out power. the large advertising sign was being pulled behind a plane. it took out two high-voltage power lines at 5th and brannon. luckily, no one was injured. at one time, about 2,000 customers were without power. san francisco police are going to start ticketing drivers who don't feed the meters on sundays. the new rule went into effect this year, but officers really haven't been enforcing it just yet. they've been giving out warnings. but now the city says the breaks are over and you're going to have to pay to park

from noon to 6 p.m. well, the city of new orleans is about to host two of the world's biggest parties, super bowl xlvii and mardi gras. the city has been preparing for the big game for two years, and it has taken a lot of work. projects included $305 million in renovations to the airport and upgrades at the superdome. the convention center got a $93 million makeover. and $75 million was spent on streets and sidewalks and street cars. the mayor says it was a big task but his city is ready. >> for a city that seven years ago was 15 feet underwater and the last on every list in america that mattered, now we find ourselves in a city that's on the world stage. this is a huge effort. the big story is, this is not the end of the road for us. >> city leaders hope to wow the world and bring in another super bowl back to the big easy

in 2018. if you're lucky enough to be going to the super bowl in new orleans, you've got a lot to celebrate. not only are you going to see great football, but you're going to one of the world's greatest party towns. don knapp got some tips from a local new orleans native. >> reporter: what's there to do in new orleans besides the four hours you might want to spend at the super bowl? well you've heard of mardi gras, right? mardi gras and the super bowl will be underway at just about the very same time. the partyers taking a break from the game will party on. there will be 500 floats. they'll roll continuously until february 2nd. the niners and ravens play the super bowl on the 3rd, and when that game is history, they'll still be partying with mardi gras. this is a little bit of new orleans right here in san francisco. it's the boxing room restaurant. but san francisco is going to new orleans -- for those going to new orleans, he has some

suggestions suggestion. >> my advice is to not have a plan. just walk around the city and enjoy it for its natural beauty of being an old city. meet people on the streets. not have a plan, just go with it. >> reporter: in the big easy, you don't need a plan. kelly meyers says you just go with the flow. >> eat a lot. definitely hit the hole in the walls. drink a lot. that's always fun. walk around. definitely hit up red fish grill, one of our favorites. get some charbroiled oysters. just have an awesome time! >> reporter: don knapp, cbs 5. >> all right. that's the plan. but anyone looking for a room in the big easy is probably out of luck. new orleans tourism officials say hotels about about 85% booked. but after this weekend, the city's hotel rooms will be virtually sold out. new orleans officials say they expect a lot of super bowl guests to stick around for

combo of good food, new technology -- >> it makes it more of an experience, i guess. >> reporter: -- and good spirits, it should be quite a day to celebrate. >> go niners! we're gonna win it. >> reporter: anne makovec, cbs 5. >> of course, san francisco isn't the only city with super bowl fever. on the other side of the country, people in baltimore are getting ready too. the ravens have wrapped up their final home practice of the season, and some of those players took a little time to meet with fans. >> to have all those fans out there, i was hearing, ooh, ooh, over and over again. that gave me chills. >> people in baltimore are also decking out their homes and businesses and of course others are getting ready to make the trek down to new orleans for the game. among them, a patient baltimore couple with quite a love story. jim and daisy had their first date at a super bowl party

twelve years ago. they've been together ever since. even though they talked about marriage, they agreed to wait for a very important date. >> so i said, no, no, no. when the ravens make it back to the super bowl, then we'll finally get married. >> well, the couple will tie the knot in new orleans on super bowl weekend. we have some showers early on today. kind of a cool, brisk day around the bay area. i think more of that cold air plunging toward the bay area as we speak. you can see the clouds spinning off the coastline. not much energy with the system. so i think late tonight, maybe early tomorrow morning, a chance of a few scattered showers, but that cold arctic air continues to race into the bay area. so the temperatures are really going to be dropping off. we're likely to see freezing numbers in some spots inland today. as you approach the coastline, a better chance of a few light showers. temperatures there mainly into the 40's. as we head toward sunday, if you sleep in, you might miss

most of the rain. just a chance of showers early in the morning. by the afternoon, partly cloudy, but the temperatures are going to be very cool, low to mid 50's. that's about as warm as it's going to get. if you do plan on traveling around the state, watch out. snow expected in the high country. in lake tahoe, high of only 34. 31 in yosemite with snow. 59 and partly cloudy in fresno. slight chance of showers in monterey bay. and about 48 degrees with showers expected in eureka. on the big picture, we've got this weak system sliding toward the bay area now. that will bring with it more cold air and a chance of showers overnight into early tomorrow morning. behind it, we begin to dry out. the ridge is going to start to build into the bay area. all right. throughout the night, we've got a few clouds out there. a chance of a few scattered showers but not much. best chance, near the coastline and into parts of the south bay. the better part of sunday

looking okay. we'll see a mixture of sunshine and just a couple of passing clouds. but grab the jacket. it is going to stay cool. chilly spots inland today. down to 34 in livermore. about 31, just below freezing, in santa rosa. the bay likely to see some 30's and a couple of 40's too. as you look around the bay in the afternoon, low 50's toward the coastline. mountaintops chilly, only in the 40's. next couple of days, i think dryer weather returns our way, at least a dryer pattern. then warmer weather toward tuesday and wednesday. by the end of this next week, some of those temperatures may actually make it up into the mid 60's. back to you. line up to see the best line in hockey and the warriors pay visit to monte in milwaukee. sports is next.

measuring up. the sandwich chain says it will make sure a well, just in time for the super bowl, subway's foot longs are measuring up. the sandwich chain says it will make sure a foot-long sub is a full 12 inches, this after a customer in australia posted a picture showing that his sub was an inch shorter. a west sacramento man is one of several customers who even sued subway for misleading claims. okay. this is an incredible survivor story that you have to see to believe. a new hampshire toddler is recovering from this, a colored pencil that went through her eye socket and about five inches into her brain. the little girl is extremely lucky. surgeons were able to remove the pencil, and amazingly, it didn't do any damage.
